Based on my genetics and the bone structure of my feet, I have the tendency towards bunions. In an effort to prevent them from forming, I have spent a good amount of time learning exercises to bring space between my toes and have played around with different ‘toys’ such as toe spacers and toe spreaders (what they put between your toes when you get a pedicure).
All of these have helped but I have never been consistent about sticking to any of it. A few years ago, I took a look at my foot when my sock was on. I noticed how my toes were all scrunched together, as if they were being squeezed in. I then tried spreading my toes out, but was limited due to the constriction my sock was creating. I then realized just how significant my socks were in regards to creating space between my toes and helping to not only prevent bunions, but also to allow for increased foot function.
I then decided to do some self-research and purchased a package of toe socks. I don’t wear the vibram 5-fingers (the shoes that fit like a glove). I wear regular shoes, but added the toe socks. I found I had much greater access to toe movement as I went about my day and could actually spread my toes out in my shoes.
After several months of wearing the toe socks, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was actually more space between each of my toes. The only change I made was wearing toe socks (disclaimer: now that it’s summer you’ll find me sans socks in sandals ;)).
The change I noticed in my feet, the increased space between my toes, happened because each and every day as my feet were in my shoes, my toes were able to move just a bit more than they normally could. And this little bit of movement over-time resulted in a significant shift in my feet.
Toe socks are an affordable and easy way to make a difference in your own feet. And, as our feet are our support, creating a positive change in them will have a positive effect on your entire structure.
My suggestion to you today is to go buy some toe socks. Even if you are wearing sandals most days now that it is warm, you can wear them when you are out hiking, walking, running, or out-and-about in any sort of closed toe shoe.
